Chevy 3. 48- 4. 09 Induction and Ignition Guide. The heads and intake are essential for making additional horsepower. Carburetors and other induction equipment are matched to supply the correct fuel load for the most intense and efficient burn to produce maximum horsepower. Once that fuel load has been compressed in the combustion chamber, it needs to be fired and that’s where the ignition comes in. The Edelbrock RPM Performer intake manifold features a boss for the original oil breather tube.

  1. It's not unreasonable to say the Chevrolet small-block V-8 changed the face of automotive engine history. Innovative and technologically advanced when it debuted in.
  2. TECH NOTES: Edelbrock heads are sold individually (except Flatheads, E-Street & E-Series small-block applications)- check listings for details.

Generally, an older manifold has a hole for the tube while new ones have just the boss cast into the manifold. If there are no provisions for adding oil on the valve covers, an engine may need the feed tube on the intake. This Tech Tip is From the Full Book  “HOW TO REBUILD & MODIFY CHEVY 3. ENGINES“. Having a big carburetor on a big engine was almost a necessity. Up until that time, Chev- rolet never used the three, 2- barrel carburetor system on its small- block. Rochester fuel injection was used in 1. As the new W engine was the first of Chevrolet’s big- blocks, the fuel demands would be higher with the additional 6.

Performance was already a buzzword at Chevrolet and much of General Motors so a package of three, 2- barrel carburetors was brought out quickly in the first year of the 3. By the time the next model year rolled out, Chevrolet corrected its mistake of not offering the more popular manual transmission and the 1. Chevrolet was the first to offer “three deuces and four speed.”Intake Manifolds.

Just how much potential horse- power that can be found in an intake manifold is amazing. Any top engine builder can take an aftermarket performance intake manifold out of the box and use it to coax another 1. Stock Manifold Features. In the case of the W series of engines, Chevrolet was reported to have made close to 2.

W engine from 1. 95. When compared to the small- block Chevy engine, the style selection was one less as W engines never came with a single 2- barrel carburetor setup as the 2. Adobe Acrobat Serial Registry Location For Wallpaper.

The only choices for induction on all Ws were a sin- gle 4- barrel carburetor, two 4- barrel carburetors or three 2- barrel carburetors. That changed when the 4. In 1. 96. 3, Chevrolet upped the ante in the full- size muscle car wars. As an option, the Impala SS carried 2- barrel carbs to feed a solid lifter cam to produce 4. Many owners building an engine with 6. The classic W dual- quad carb and intake setup resides on this drag car.

The Winters foundry cast this aluminum 4- barrel intake for General Motors. The casting number, complete with what has become known as a “snowflake” ID, is on a single, 4- barrel intake. The “snow- flake” identifies this as a Winters foundry piece and the company made many of the intakes for Chevrolet. These were a high- flow intake and are highly desirable. The Winters intake has two different routes taken by the two plenums. One feed path supplies fuel to the opposing cylinders while the other route feeds the others.

This way, they each only have to supply two cylinders. This topside view shows mostly the one path.

The plenum of the Winters single 4- barrel factory intake has two distinct depths. This is a dual- plenum intake in which one level feeds one set of cylinders and the other the remaining cylinders. The idea is still used today in some performance intake manifolds. This shows the bottom of the Winters intake. Without the splash pan, the routes of the plenums can also be seen. Note the way the bolt hole for the intake is above the intake ports, signifying this is a later- model 4. Note too, how wide the water jacket gets under the center of the sole carburetor.

A cool fuel feed creates more power than a hot one. With this casting date, it is identified as one of the prime- time intakes for single 4- barrels. As the 4. 09s went past 1. General Motors wanted to have a lower profile and that meant racing was downplayed.

It was a time when it could have used many of the Z1. Edelbrock offers a wide range of aluminum intakes for the W engine, and this single 4- barrel RPM Performer intake manifold is one of them. To retain the classic W- engine look, it contains the front- mounted oil fill tube. You can choose between a small- port manifold that’s suitable for stock heads and a large- port manifold that’s ideal for large port aftermarket high- performance heads. These manifolds offer a healthy increase in flow from mid powerband on up. The oil pressure gauge receives signals from an oil pressure sending unit, and this one is mounted on Walden’s 5.

Using the oil fill boss to mount the oil pressure sending unit is a good idea. Many racers often use two sending units in case one fails.

Here, the crankcase ventilation tube wraps around the block at the back of the engine. In the late 1. 95. It’s important to include the breather tube on an original restoration. Chevrolet made 1. Those aluminum versions were for only one 4- barrel carburetor, not the two, 4- barrel versions that would come later with the 4.

The famous cast- iron, three- deuces intake had the casting number of 3. An aluminum, single 4- barrel  intake made exclusively for boat engines was made with a reverse plenum as most engines are mounted with the front facing the stern or back end of the boat. For the 4. 09, Chevrolet offered 1. Z1. 1 as one intake yet with two separate casting numbers for the valley pan and upper intake. Noticeably absent from the list is a three 2- barrel intake for 4. In its place was the high- performance dual 4- barrel carburetor option. Intake Interchangeability.

Many of these intakes were rated with horsepower numbers, but that can be misleading. These intakes only provide the rated numbers when matched with the heads that are part of that particular package. It can go even further when cams, lifters, and compression numbers are factored in. Higher- horsepower intakes do flow better, but must be used with complementary heads and parts. There were a few duplications of applications with all those intakes, but with the amount of manifolds made from 1.

Online auctions and local sales are two of the quickest ways to tap into the almost constant re- surfacing of listings for such parts. Here’s a rare, reverse- plenum, single 4- barrel intake that was made for boat applications. As boat engines had to be angled to get the propeller into the water, the change in the angle of the engine affected the carb and its operation. This manifold was created to offset the engine angle and keep the carb and its floats level. From the passenger side, you see the distributor hold- down, choke and water neck still place.

All these parts would need to be installed for a restoration build. Design. Many new intakes were engineered in tandem with the latest design of heads. That’s why swapping any intakes and heads on W engines requires the heads to be matched to the intakes, and vice versa. As those heads created more and more power, the matching intakes had to line up with the changing intake manifold bolt patterns. The problem was some of the holes for mounting an intake were in the way of the intake ports of the heads, limiting their size and ultimately their ability to perform. When Chevrolet made heads that moved those holes for bigger ports, new manifolds had to be created that would fit the new bolt pattern. And as Chevrolet made a number of these big changes to its heads, it had to create new intakes with matching bolt patterns.

The pattern for the heads to bolt to the block never changed but the one for intakes to heads did and numerous times. Swapping 3. 48 & 4. Intakes. The swapping of heads goes along the same path. A set of 4. 09 heads on a 3.
